The Sonnensee is a small lake in Magdeburg in the area of the Randau-Calenberge district .
The lake is located east of the Elbe , roughly in the Kapitelwerder area . It extends from north-west to south-east for about 300 meters; its width is only about 20 meters. The northern section, which is not connected to the southern part when the water level is low, is lined with trees. To the east of the lake is the bike and footpath running from the Westerhüsen ferry to Randau-Calenberge through the Elbe meadows. The Sonnensee is located in the flood area of the Elbe and is often flooded during high water. The immediate vicinity of the lake serves as pasture.
It is speculated that the Sonnensee or the Jägerkolke further north could be the place where, according to the legend of Wiesenwarters Marie, a young forester drowned.
