Sundial (Ormidale House)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The sundial of Ormidale House is a sundial on the lands of Ormidale House in the valley Glendaruel on the Scottish peninsula Cowal . John Campbell commissioned the structure , which was completed in 1719. Initially, the sundial was erected on the grounds of Ballimore House in south Cowal near Tighnabruich . When Burnley Campbell , husband of Margaret Campbell of Ormidale , sold Ballimore House in 1897, he moved the sundial to its current location. In 1971 the Ormidale House sundial was moved to theScottish listed monuments in the highest category A.

The stone structure is richly decorated with ornaments. It stands on a high, square base that tapers in steps and is equipped with several gnomons . It has the shape of an obelisk . The inscriptions IMC / 1719 and MNC / 1830 can be found on two embedded plates . It is unusual that for the star ornamentation , a five- star was not used for the star ornamentation, as is the case with most comparable sundials .
