history
In 1694 the Jesuit order founded the mission "San Marcelo de Sonoyta", which was destroyed on the night of November 21st to November 22nd, 1751 during a revolt of the Pima Indians . The Jesuit priest Heinrich Ruhen was killed in this attack. Only five years later, in 1756, was his body recovered and buried by the missionary Ignaz Pfefferkorn . The mission was not re-established. It was not until 1771 that a regular Christian service could be held again. On the 250th anniversary of Ruhen's death, the Borsum "Freundeskreis Pater Heinrich Ruhen" built a memorial chapel in Sonoita. In 2006 the chapel was decorated with sacred works of art by the painter and sculptor Werner Schubert-Deister . In Borsum , the birthplace of Ruhen, a "Sonoyta Square" commemorates the city.
