Sonpur was a princely state of British India in what is now the state of Odisha . Its capital was the place Sonpur .

It was founded in 1556 by Madan Gopal Singh Deo, a son of the Raja of Sambalpur ( Chauhan - Rajputs ), and was a British protectorate from 1803 to 1947 . In 1901 it had an area of 2347 km² and 170,000 inhabitants. Sonpur was under the Central Provinces until 1905, then Bengal or Orissa ( Odisha ).

The Raja joined the Eastern States Union in August 1947 . On January 1, 1948, this union was dissolved and Sonpur Orissa and thus India incorporated. On November 1, 1956, all princely states were dissolved.
