Sunday hotel
The Sontag Hotel ( kor .: 손탁 호텔 ) opened in 1902 and was the first European hotel in Seoul ( South Korea ). The hotel was a dedication from King Gojong to the German - Russian Antoinette Sontag, who served the Joseon royal family with western food. She was the sister-in-law of the Russian ambassador , Carl von Waeber . She spoke German , Russian , English and some Korean . Queen Min is said to have only accepted Western cuisine if it was prepared by Sontag. Yet it was almost expelled from Korea when Japan seized a great deal of control before the annexation of Korea.
The hotel was sold in 1917 and demolished in 1922. It is considered one of the first places to serve coffee in Korea.
The hotel was right next to Deoksu Palace .
