Deoksugung (IPA [təks'uk'uŋ] ) is one of five Korean palaces in Seoul that were built during the Joseon Dynasty .
Originally it was not a palace, but a prince's villa . In 1598 all palaces were destroyed during the Imjin War . Therefore, after a renovation, the royal family used the same villa as a temporary palace. The building complex was given the palace name Gyeongungung ( kor. 경운궁 , 慶 運 宮 ; [kjəŋunk'uŋ] ).
It was not until 1907 that the palace was given its current name Deoksugung . This palace was one of the sites of the fall of the Joseon Dynasty .
Between 1910 and 1945, when Korea was a province of Japan , the Japanese language was considered the national language . The Hanja or Kanji of the palace name ( Japanese 德 壽 宮 ) were therefore pronounced in Japanese, and it was called Tokujukyū at that time .
