Csesznek ( German: Zeßnegg ; Croat . Česneg and Slovak. Česnek ) is a Hungarian municipality in the Zirc district in the Veszprém county . It is famous for its medieval castle.

Geographical location

Csesznek is a good ten kilometers north of the city of Zirc . The neighboring municipality of Bakonyszentkirály borders directly north on Csesznek.

history

The medieval castle of Csesznek was built in 1263 by Baron Jakab Cseszneky , who was the sword-bearer of King Béla IV . He and his descendants were named after the Cseszneky castle . It was a royal castle between 1326 and 1392 when King Sigismund offered to change it for the Garai family to replace the Banat of Macsó. In 1482 the male line of the Garais died out and King Matthias Corvinus donated the castle to the Szapolyai family. In 1527, Baron Bálint Török took over the castle. During the 16th century, the Csábi, Szelestey and Wathay families owned Csesznek. In 1561 Lőrinc Wathay successfully repulsed the siege of the Ottomans . However, the castle was occupied by the Turkish troops in 1594, but the Hungarians regained it in 1598. Dániel Esterházy bought the castle and the village in 1635. From then until 1945, Csesznek was owned by the Esterházy family .
