Sony Optiarc KK ( Japanese ソ ニ ー オ プ テ ィ ア ー ク 株式会社 , Sonī Oputiāku kabushiki kaisha , English Sony Optiarc Inc. ) was a manufacturer of optical drives.

history

The company was founded in April 2006 as a joint venture between Sony and NEC under the name Sony NEC Optiarc . Effective December 5, 2008, Sony took over NEC's 45 percent stake in the joint venture and was henceforth sole shareholder. Since then the company has called itself just Sony Optiarc. In August 2012, it became known that Sony was planning to stop manufacturing optical drives. Sony Optiarc was then closed at the end of the fiscal year on March 31, 2013.

Products

Products were both DVD +/- R (W) and BD-ROM drives. Sony Optiarc supplied the Blu-ray drives for the Sony PlayStation 3 , among other things . The naming scheme for the drives is as follows: DDU stands for DVD-ROM, AD stands for DVD-RW, BR for BD-ROM and BC for BD Combo. A combo drive is a drive that only supports the newer format for reading and for writing the predecessor. The three following digits indicate the generation, the design (5.25 "or Slimline ) and the speed class. The number on it the equipment variant and the attached letter the interface. An AD-7243S is a 5.25" DVD-RW Drive with 24x speed when writing DVD-R and DVD + R blanks. It also supports Labelflash. For Lightscribe a "1" would be in the fourth position. The "S" indicates SATA. An "A" stands for PATA. However, the last Optiarc drives were no longer available with this legacy interface.
