Sophia Ellis b. Holley (born January 30, 1927 ) is a retired American German teacher in Detroit.

Life

Ellis is one of nine siblings. Her brother is the jazz pianist Major Holley . In 1949, Sophia Ellis completed her bachelor's degree. The Urban League, one of the oldest Afro-American freedom movements, financed her a scholarship for biology and German. As a teacher, she completed her master's degree in German language and literature at the University of Ann Arbor as the only black American woman this year.

On May 2, 1995 , Federal President Roman Herzog awarded her the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for her efforts to promote American-German relations . In 2006 she received the Educator of the Year Award in Washington from the National Council for International Visitors .

Since 1950 she has taught in the Detroit Public Schools, most recently at Martin Luther King High School. She retired in 2006 at the age of 77 as the longest-serving teacher in the state of Michigan .
