Sophia Gorham
Sophia Hope Gorham (* 1881 in Scotland , † December 4, 1969 in Chichester , West Sussex ) was a British Olympic competitor in motor boating .
In the 1908 Olympic Games in London Sophia Gorham took according to some sources, together with her husband John Marshall Gorham and his boat, the Quicksilver , the motorboat Competitions in the B-Class more than 40 nautical miles in part. In this class, only motor boats with a maximum length of 20 meters were allowed to start. The rival boat , the Gyrinus owned by Thomas Thornycroft , Bernard Redwood and John Field-Richards , initially looked equal, but after two laps it was able to pull away from the Quicksilver . After water ran into it, John Marshall Gorham gave up after two laps. If Sophia Gorham had actually been a member of the crew, she would be the only woman among probably 13 men at the Olympic motorboat tournament.
The Quicksilver did not start in the other boat classes . After 1908, motor boats never became Olympic again.
