Soputan is a very active stratovolcano on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia .
Between 1405 and 2007 there were 34 eruptions in Soputan, 28 of them since 1901. The eruptions mostly follow the same pattern: explosive eruptions and pyroclastic flows , often with lava flows, more rarely with phreatomagmatic explosions . The strength moved on the volcanic explosivity index between 1 and 3.
As a young volcano, Soputan has little vegetation . The striking northeast flank of the mountain was formed in 1906 from lava flows that lasted until 1924.
On the morning of June 6, 2008, there was an eruption with ash up to two kilometers high.
Another eruption occurred on July 3, 2011, emitting ash, smoke and gas. A safety zone of 6 miles has been established.
On August 14, 2011 he broke out again several times. In addition to a kilometer-high column of smoke, lava also emerged.
The volcano was active several times in 2015, but without injuring anyone.
At the beginning of January 2016, the second highest warning level was imposed when a 300 meter high cloud of smoke had formed.
On October 3, 2018, a few days after the Sulawesi earthquake in 2018 , the volcano hurled ash over six kilometers into the air. However, a connection between the two events is considered very unlikely.
