The reactor in 1960

The institute is affiliated with the Israel Atomic Energy Commission (IAEC). In 1958, construction work began on the nuclear research center. The reactor was commissioned in 1960. It is a 5- MW - light water reactor , which in the 1950s by the United States under the program Atoms for Peace was delivered.

There is also a 10 MeV proton cyclotron and a 40 MeV linear accelerator , which is expected to be put into operation in 2013.

As early as the 1970s, the nuclear research center turned away from pure nuclear research and devoted itself to other interdisciplinary areas from physics , medicine , astronautics , nuclear safety , atmospheric research, and nuclear medicine .

On June 21, 1990, there was an incident in which an employee was irradiated. The man died five weeks later of his radiation injuries despite intensive medical treatment.
