Sorn Castle

Sorn Castle is a manor house near the Scottish village of Sorn in the East Ayrshire council area . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. Furthermore, the stables of the manor house are listed independently as Category A buildings. A monument ensemble does not exist.

history

The nucleus of Sorn Castle was a tower house , which probably dates from the 15th century, but could also be older. A more recent plaque indicates the year 1409. In the 16th century, and again in 1783, the Tower House was expanded. The Scottish architect David Bryce was commissioned with the modernization and redesign in 1865 . The most recent expansion was made in 1909. Today Sorn Castle has a restaurant for weddings with an attached hotel.

Sorn Castle is just west of the village of Sorn on the north bank of the River Ayr . It is designed in the Scottish Baronial Style with encircling battlements. The stables from the 1830s are located around 300 m to the north-west. The buildings completely enclose an inner courtyard, which is accessible via a doorway designed with a triangular gable and paired pilasters .
