Sorn ( Gaelic : An Sorn ), formerly Dalgain , is a village in the west of the Scottish Council Area East Ayrshire or in the traditional county of Ayrshire . It is located around six kilometers east of Mauchline and northwest of Cumnock am Ayr .

history

The lands came into the possession of Andrew Hamilton, the third son of David Hamilton of Cadzow , around 1406 . A tower house was probably built on the site in the early 15th century . This was expanded by the Hamilton clan and later the Earls of Winton and Earls of Loudoun to what is now the manor house Sorn Castle .

It is thanks to its fertile soils that agriculture was important in Sorn's history. In addition to coal, iron ore and lime were also mined in the village. In the second half of the 20th century the population of Sorn increased. In 1961 there were still 273 people living in Sorn, compared to 400 in 1991.

traffic

Sorn is located on the B743, which is of little importance in terms of traffic. The B713 from Catrine joins from the south . In the past, today's Sorn Old Bridge , built in the early 18th century, was of some importance as a crossing of the Ayr. Within ten kilometers are the A76 ( Kilmarnock - Dumfries ) in the west and the A71 ( Edinburgh - Irvine ) in the north, two national trunk roads.
