history

In Scotland, shoemakers worked and traded mainly in small workshops until the end of the 19th century. In the 1871 census survey, 3266 shoemaker workshops were counted in Scotland. The present workshop was built in 1897 by James Merchant , who lived in the adjacent house. Merchant ran the workshop until his death in 1941. Later the workshop was used as a warehouse. With the death of his daughter in 1999, the completeness of the facility was discovered and the building was listed as a historical monument the following year. It is considered to be the most fully preserved turn-of-the-century cobbler's workshop in Scotland. A similar but older building is Souter Johnnie's Cottage in Kirkoswald in South Ayrshire .
