South Island (literally translated from English South Island ) is a rocky island in the Heard Archipelago and McDonald Islands in the southern Indian Ocean . It is the southernmost object in the McDonald Islands group .
Scientists from the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions mapped it in 1948 and gave it the descriptive name.
