South Park City is an open-air museum in the village of Fairplay in Park County in the US state of Colorado in the United States .

history

The founder of the museum was Leon H. Snyder , a Colorado Springs attorney who wanted to keep the historic buildings in the area from further deterioration and vandalism . The buildings were built during the gold rush and were left to decay after the gold had been mined and the prospectors had moved on. He and other colleagues founded the South Park Historical Foundation in 1957 as the sponsoring company for the museum. Land and the seven buildings that already stood on the site in the old part of Fairplay were bought by the Foundation (society). In the summer of 1957 a further six buildings were brought to Fairplay and rebuilt there. In 1958 more buildings were relocated and around 40,000 items were collected through donations that year. The museum, the reconstruction of a historic mining town, was finally opened in 1959 and other buildings and items were added in the years that followed.

museum

The open-air museum today consists of 35 furnished historical buildings with sidewalks, a narrow-gauge railway with various trailers and a few carriages. The museum is particularly reminiscent of the Colorado Gold Rush , one of the largest gold rushes in the United States and the later Colorado Silver Boom in South Park in the 1850s to 1880s . Today there are more than 60,000 objects in the buildings that illustrate economic and social aspects of life at that time. Two of the buildings, the South Park Brewery and the Summer Saloon , are listed on the National Register of Historic Places . The museum is located on the west end of Front Street and is open daily from mid-May to mid-October.
