Fairplay is a small community in the US state of Colorado and is located around 120 km southwest of Denver . Fair play was the beginning of the Colorado Gold Rush founded in 1859, when prospectors on the South Platte River in Gold met. The community provides the county seat for Park County and is the fifth highest place in Colorado at an altitude of 3,034 m. It is also the largest settlement in the belt of grasslands known as South Park . Fair play is the model for the fictional city of South Park, Colorado in the animated television series South Park .

geography

Fairplay is on the western edge of South Park, at the intersection of US Highway 285 and Colorado State Highway 9 . The place extends on the flank of a mountain on the banks of the Middle Fork South Platte River . There the State Route follows the river valley north to Alma and the Hoosier Pass .

Fair play geographical coordinates be 39 ° 13 '  N , 106 ° 0'  W . According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 2.7  km² and has no significant body of water.

history

The name of the community means "honest game" and at the time emphasized the equality of opportunity that the first prospectors granted all subsequent gold prospectors after they had previously been excluded from the gold digs as latecomers at Tarryall Creek .

The city, founded in 1859, was incorporated as a town on November 15, 1872 .

Gold and silver were mined in the Fairplay mines until the middle of the 20th century.

Today the city consists of both modern supermarkets on the highway and the historic city above the river on Front Street. The northern part of the development on this street is listed and part of an open-air museum with 34 historical buildings, the so-called South Park City , which is supposed to commemorate the early days of the gold rush. There are more than 60,000 items here that illustrate life from that time.

Burro Days

On the last weekend of July, the Burro Days, which have been held since 1948, take place annually in Fairplay . The main event is a race in which the donkeys, led by their supervisors, walk a 47-kilometer path from Fairplay over the Mosquito Pass to the Mosquito Range , overcoming around 1000 meters in altitude. An adaptation of the Burro Days can be found in the South Park episode " Cow Days ".

The race lasts about five hours. There are several other packhorse races in Colorado, the most famous of which is Leadville . In the 1960s and early 1970s, the Leadville race was fair play or the other way around. It followed the route that Father Dyer took on his preaching rounds and delivering the mail. The rivalry between the two cities eventually ended this joint event and resulted in races being held separately.

South Park TV series

The location served the makers of the animated television series South Park as a model for the location of the same name. While various geographic references in the TV series actually point to fair play, the city is much smaller than South Park in the series, which has more of a suburban character. One of the writers on the series, Trey Parker , grew up in Conifer and attended school in Evergreen . These two places are parishes in Jefferson County in the mountains just west of Denver . Co-author Matt Stone lived in Littleton , a suburb of Denver.

Since Fair Play is a regional center for the South Park region, the name South Park was used in the city to name various institutions, including South Park High School .

Although the fictional South Park reflects life in the real city Fairplay resist, but it is in the episode The Night of the Living Homeless (English Night of the Living Homeless ) determined by the figure Gerald Broflovski that the city is "four miles" .
