The black mouth cur is not the AKC or the FCI recognized dog breed in the United States . The breed has been recognized by the UKC since 1998 .
Origin and history
The exact origin of the Black Mouth Cur is not clear. The two main theories about its origin claim an origin either from the mountains of Tennessee or from Mississippi . In any case, the breed is a hunting and protection dog of the white settlers in North America, which is believed to have originated from the cross between European and native dogs.

The Black Mouth Cur is a medium-sized cur- type dog . The UKC's breed standard expressly names the ability to work as the main criterion for evaluation. The fur is short and close-fitting, the colors are red, yellow, fawn, black, brown and brindle , with or without a black mask . Little white is allowed as long as it does not cover more than ten percent of the body surface. Dilute variants are also permitted. Spotting , mottling, Merle color and a white collar are not admitted.
The head is quite large in relation to the body, the muzzle is slightly shorter than the skull and is separated from it by a clear stop . The lips are tight. A complete scissor bite is desirable. Overshot or undershot bite leads to disqualification. The lop ears are short to medium long and set high.
A dog that is designed for endurance and whose body length corresponds to its height at the withers or is slightly longer is desirable . The back is straight, the loins are slightly curved. The rib cage is broad and muscular, with a minimum of four inches (10 cm) between the forelegs .

The Black Mouth Cur is a fast hunting dog that hunts both by sight and with the help of its sense of smell . It is used to hunt squirrels and raccoons , which it drives up a tree like the coonhounds and barks, but also for hunting wild boar and bear. When chasing the game he is not very loud , but barks at most occasionally.
In addition to being used as a hunting dog, the breed can also be used as a protection and guard dog .
