Southford Falls State Park is a state park in the US state of Connecticut in the area of the parishes of Oxford and Southbury .

history

At the beginning of the 20th century the factory of the Diamond Match Company was located here, which operated a paper mill and produced cardboard boxes. In 1923 the factory burned down and in 1927 the site was transferred to the state. In 1932 the site was converted into a state park.

geography

In the north of the park is the Papermill Pond , a small reservoir that used to secure the water supply for the paper mill. From there, Eightmile Brook flows south and spills over various waterfalls. Geologically, the park belongs to the Iapetos Terrane, a large area in Connecticut that was created by the metamorphosis of the rocks of the Iapetus Sea . The river was probably deepened by human hands to divert the water into the mills. And in the Ice Age, glaciers created the valley that opens to the south. In some places gneiss comes to light, which belongs to the Collinsville Formation . The Eightmile Brook forms the border between Oxford and Southbury over long stretches and falls steeply from Lake Quassapaug to the Housatonic River .

free time activities

There is a covered bridge in the park that is often used for wedding photos. There are picnic areas in addition to skiing and ice skating in winter and hiking and fishing. It is a designated trout park that is stocked with trout every week.
