Soci

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sozi (plural: Sozis or, slightly derogatory, Sozen ) is a colloquial, also derogatory acronym for a supporter of social democracy or socialism or a party member of corresponding parties.

Today it is often used in Germany as a short form for supporters or members of the SPD or generally for supporters of the political left , sometimes in an avowed form by the supporters themselves, e.g. B. explicitly as an organization name for secular socis and "web socis" or as a designation for the membership request "socis against data retention", "socis for the legalization of cannabis", but sometimes also as a blanket degradation or even as a swear word . The plural 'Sozis' or Sozen, which are occasionally used disparagingly, are also used.

In Austria the short form was mainly used during the time of Austrofascism to belittle the supporters of SDAPÖ or socialism. After 1945 the supporters of the newly founded SPÖ were also referred to as socis , but without any negative reference; today the term is rarely used.

The acronym became known to a broad television audience through the remark by Ekel Alfred Tetzlaff in the 1970s comedy Ein Herz und ein Seele : “ Willy Brandt , this old soci, should finally be voted out! Now he's on his knees before the Poles and Russians ”.

In the German language, the term Sozi does not only describe social democrats or socialists, but is also used as an abbreviation for various other terms beginning with "Sozi". For example, terms such as social welfare office, social welfare or social studies are often colloquially called "soci".
