Social-Cultural Society of Jews in Poland
The Social-Cultural Society of Jews in Poland ( Polish Towarzystwo Społeczno-Kulturalne Żydów w Polsce , TSKŻ ; Yiddish culture Gezelshafṭlekher Farband fun di Yidn in Poyln ) is a secular Jewish organization in Poland. The purpose of the society is to meet the cultural needs of the Jewish community, its representation in official bodies, the development of literary, scientific and artistic knowledge, the preservation of Yiddish, the protection of the Jewish heritage in the country and the material and spiritual support of its members satisfy or promote. The Socio-Cultural Society of Jews in Poland currently has around 2700 members and is the largest Jewish organization in Poland.
history
The Social-Cultural Society of Jews in Poland, one of the associations of national minorities in Poland, was founded in 1950 after the merger of the Central Committee of Jews in Poland and the Jewish Cultural Society ( Żydowskiego Towarzystwa Kultury ) in a single organization. She was considered "loyal to the party".
In 1962 the organization founded the youth club “Babel” in Warsaw. In March 1968 this association was accused by the communist authorities of Zionist conspiracy, of promoting chauvinism and nationalism .
The organization is a member of the World Jewish Congress and the European Jewish Congress . The organization currently publishes a printed bilingual monthly magazine in Yiddish and Polish, Słowo Żydowskie ( Dos Jidisze Wort ).
The administration of the organization is located in the city of Wałbrzych (German Waldenburg / Silesia).
From 1950 to 1962 its first chairman was Grzegorz Smolar (Hirsch Smolar), followed by Leopold Trepper until 1968, then Edward Rajber , later a member of the Artistic Council of the Jewish State Theater in Warsaw. Artur Hofman has been the chairman since 2006.
