The Sozialbau AG is a group of Viennese housing companies .

Sozialbau AG emerged in 1954 from the organizational amalgamation of several Viennese district cooperatives. In the non-profit association, three housing cooperatives (family, housing and Volksbau), two corporations (Neuland, Urbanbau), commercial subsidiaries (HOB, IMOVE) and several participations are supported operationally.

The company currently manages 52,203 rental and owner-occupied apartments, 29,878 garage and parking spaces and 554 business premises.

The majority of the shares in Sozialbau AG are held by the Vienna Insurance Group , which holds its stake through several subsidiaries. The SPÖ- related Association of Wiener Arbeiterwohnhäuser (through AWH Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH) holds further shares . 0.09% of the shares are held directly by the SPÖ.

In accordance with its mandate to supply social housing, the non-profit company makes a significant contribution to the still moderate housing costs, especially in the Austrian capital, Vienna , with average rents that are well below the market value and cheaply financed renovation projects .

In addition, Sozialbau AG acts as a “think tank” for strategic housing innovations: In 2001 the integration project “Inter-Ethnic Neighborhood Housing Model” was handed over, which unites residents from 22 nations under one roof and has been the subject of evaluation studies published in book form since 2003 . In 2006 the first multi-storey residential complex in solid wood construction as well as the high-rise residential building "Höchstädtplatz" were built in Vienna. The company is building 719 of its own apartments in the Seestadt Aspern .

Herbert Ludl was the long-standing CEO from 1984 to 2016.

The company is a member of the Austrian Association of non-profit building associations.
