Space Island One (AKA Space Iceland One ) was a German-British science fiction - television series in 1998. The shooting took place on the Isle of Man .
content
The first large and at the same time commercial space station Space Island One (in the German version Unity ) of the company Unity (in the German version just called the company ) orbits the earth around the year 2015 at an altitude of about 600 kilometers. By rotation prevails in some sectors of the station simulated gravity , there are laboratories and a botanical garden. The main task of the station is to carry out scientific experiments - but from a commercial point of view (ie the experiments should later generate profit through technology or products developed from them).
The main content of the episodes is the coexistence of the residents, their conflicts (due to long-term living together in a confined space) and problems (e.g. one of the residents is pregnant and hides this, otherwise she would have to return to earth immediately). However, there are also dangers from outside (e.g. plastic-eating bacteria that get to the station with rock samples from Mars ), technical problems and disputes due to the commercial orientation of some experiments or the termination of experiments that are not sufficiently profitable. Classic science fiction , on the other hand, like technobabble, can hardly be found in the series. This is primarily due to the low budget of the production, but many also see it as a big difference to the large SF series.
