List of savings banks in Austria

The Sparkasse Kufstein is a Tyrolean banking company based in Kufstein and part of the savings bank group in Austria . It was created in 1877 as a club savings bank. It is a member of the cooperation and liability association of the Austrian savings banks and the Austrian savings banks association .

Founding history

Committed Kufstein citizens took up the idea of founding a savings bank in 1875. The decision of the citizens' committee of the city of December 18, 1875 to found a municipal savings bank, however, was not implemented. Alternatively, the establishment of an association savings bank was considered.

In 1876 a committee of citizens came together under the leadership of Mayor Georg Anker to promote the establishment of an association savings bank. The statutes submitted by the citizens' committee were approved by the Ministry of the Interior by decree of October 17 and October 27, 1877, respectively. The founding meeting took place on November 14th, chaired by Mayor Georg Anker. With this, the members imposed a guarantee fund totaling 25,000 guilders, consisting of 125 shares of 200 guilders each. The Sparkasse Kufstein Association was born on November 14, 1877. The interest rate on savings was 4%. Interest on the loans was 5% within Tyrol and 6% abroad. The checkout days were Monday, Thursday and Saturday from 9 am to 12 noon.

On December 3, 1877, the Sparkasse Kufstein opened its doors as the first financial institution in the district - at that time on the first floor of the former tavern "Traube" (today the town hall) on the lower town square, in the rooms that Johann Stenzl sen. as the first director made available. He was supported by Mayor Georg Anker as the second director, and the cement manufacturer Alois Kraft as the first deputy. The first deposit - an amount of 250 guilders - was made by Sebastian Anker, Schreierbauer in Kufstein. Many followed his example, so that after just one month 7,000 guilders were reached. At the end of the first financial year in 1878 the deposit balance was 103,412 guilders. This first year ended with a surplus of 4,713 guilders.

Structural development of the main institute

Buildings on the Upper Town Square

From 1877 to 1907 the headquarters of the Sparkasse was on the 1st floor of the former Grape Inn, Unterer Stadtplatz No. 24. On November 30, 1907, they moved into their own Sparkasse building at Oberer Stadtplatz No. 1. This extraordinary building, which still shapes the image of the upper town square today, was built according to the plans of architect Wenzel Bürger from Chemnitz. From 1994 to 1996, as well as in 2011 and most recently in 2018, expansion and renovation measures took place.

Important events

After the Sparkasse Association was founded and business operations began in 1877, Sparkasse Kufstein enjoyed respectable growth. By 1890 it had developed into the "central institute" for numerous Tyrolean savings and provision funds. In 1890 it was decided to take part in the cashless postal check. The repayment of the guarantee fund of 25,000 guilders set up when the company was founded took place in 1891. And when the required reserve fund of 5% of the deposits was reached, it was possible in 1893 for the first time to meet the common good with donations from profits.

On the occasion of the 1st International Savings Banks Congress in Milan in 1924, it was decided to introduce a World Savings Day on October 31, beginning with the following year. In 1939, giro traffic was introduced and in the same year the Sparkasse Kufstein dared to set up its first branch. She rented business premises on Salzburger Strasse so that she could also offer her services in Wörgl. In 1955, the savings bank balance sheet with the reconstruction law of September 8, 1955 for the period from 1945 to 1954 was to be combined into a 10-year financial statement. World Savings Day was reintroduced in 1956 and received a new symbol with "Sparefroh". The electronic age arrived in 1971. The entire accounting of the Sparkasse was converted to EDP. After a year of renovation in the Sparkasse building on Oberer Stadtplatz, the Sparkasse moved into one-storey business premises for the first time since it was founded. The good development of the Sparkasseninstitut, but also of the location in Wörgl, made it possible to close the now 33-year-old branch on Salzburger Strasse and to build a separate Sparkasse building on Speckbacher Strasse. The new Sparkasse in Wörgl was put into operation and opened in 1973. Many other branches were to follow: Kundl and Kirchbichl (1974/75), Ellmau (1978), Söll (1979), Walchsee and Wildschönau (1982), Ebbs (1983), Kufstein / Zell (1986), Niederndorf (1988), Bad Häring (1989), Thiersee (1991), Kufstein / Sparchen (1992), Kufstein / Endach (1993), Kufstein / District Hospital (1999), Wörgl / Brixentaler Straße (2007), Langkampfen (2010) and Kössen-Schwendt (2014) .

In 1979 the Sparkasse Kufstein received the status of a universal bank through the new Sparkassengesetz. The first ATM was set up in Kufstein in 1982, and the first self-service zone was set up in the following year. In April 2003, the Sparkasse acquired the neighboring building, the so-called "Klammer" property. This created the basis for an expansion of the main institute. In the course of intensified sector cooperation, the Erste Bank branch in Kufstein was bought in 2004 and successfully integrated into Sparkasse Kufstein at the end of 2004. Sparkasse Kufstein joined the Sparkasse Liability Association at the beginning of December 2008. On October 24, 2011, the renovation and extension of the savings bank building on the upper town square was officially opened. For the year of its 140th anniversary, Sparkasse Kufstein was able to record new record values for deposits and financing in 2017. As of December 31, 2017, the total capital ratio reached its highest level to date at over 28% for the first time. On December 1, 2017, the Tyrolean state government granted Sparkasse Kufstein the right to use the Tyrolean state coat of arms in business transactions in recognition of its economic importance.
