List of savings banks in Austria

The Sparkasse Schwaz AG is a Tyrolean banking company based in Schwaz and part of the savings bank group in Austria . It was created in 1872 as a club savings bank. The Sparkasse is a member of the cooperation and liability association of the Austrian savings banks and the Austrian savings bank association .

Founding history

When the central authorities suggested the establishment of savings banks in Austria in 1821, Kreishauptmann Mensy suggested Innsbruck or Schwaz to the Tyrolean governor Karl Count Chotek as the seat of a savings bank. For this purpose he wanted to get in touch with the president of the poor association in Schwaz, Count Tannenberg. The establishment of a savings bank should be combined with the reorganization of the poor. In 1822 Tannenberg wanted to see a savings bank founded in Innsbruck with a branch in Schwaz. In 1856 a new plan to found the building failed because the local workers had already been burdened by drawing the national loan from 1854. At the end of February 1872, a savings bank association was finally established, which also issued guarantees for 50,000 guilders. At the end of October the Lieutenancy agreed and in November 1872 the savings banks could start working.

Structural development of the main office

After it was founded, the Sparkasse was on the 1st floor of the municipal building in Marktgasse (today Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Strasse), which became the property of the Sparkasse in 1885 by means of an exchange agreement and is still the headquarters of the Sparkasse. Since then, the building has been continuously modernized and expanded, primarily through the purchase of the adjacent house in 1929.

Important events

On November 1st, 1872 the Sparkasse Schwaz started its business activities. In 1925, Sparkasse Schwaz took part in World Savings Day for the first time , which is also seen as the first approach to school savings. In 1940, Schwaz was the first institute in the district to introduce the private current account. With the introduction of the field service in 1946, the offer began to expand across the entire catchment area. A new era for Sparkasse Schwaz began in 1968 when a magnetic card-oriented data processing system was put into operation. Ten years later, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary, the Sparkasse made donations to the Schwaz District Hospital, the Red Cross and the old people's homes in Schwaz, Jenbach and Zell am Ziller. In 1997 the Sparkasse celebrated its 125th anniversary. In the following year, a Luxembourg fund of funds was set up, the 1st Austrian Fund of Funds was introduced and, with it, asset management for smaller assets.

Two years later the cooperation with the municipality of Schwaz began. The Schwaz Silver Summer, one of the cultural highlights of the city of Schwaz, was supported on a larger scale. From 2000 onwards, the theater association “Casually” was sponsored. In the following year, the promotion of talented scholars in the region began by supporting the district cup.
