Köpetdag Ashgabat ( Russian "Копетдаг" Ашхабад ) is a former football club from the Turkmen capital Ashgabat and has been one of the most successful clubs in the country for as long as it existed.
history
The club was the first Turkmen Cup winner and Republic Champion as Lokomotiw Ashgabat in 1936 and 1937/38, respectively, and subsequently played under different names (before 1938 and 1946–1949 Lokomotiw; 1939–1945 Dynamo Ashgabat , 1950–1955 Spartak Ashgabat , 1956 –1959 and 1976–1988 Kolchostschy Aşgabat , 1962–1975 Stroitel Aşgabat , since 1989 Köpetdag) mostly in the second and third division of the Soviet Union , but after the collapse of the Soviet Union it was the most successful club in Turkmenistan with six championship titles and cup wins in summer 2008 However, the club withdrew from the game operations while the Turkmen League was running and was subsequently dissolved.
In the 1930s and 1940s the club won nine of the first ten cup competitions of the Turkmen SSR.
In 1939 they reached the first of four times the round of 16 of the Soviet Cup; At the end of the 1940s one rose for the first time in the third Soviet division to play in the entire 1950s in the second Soviet division (B class), but was downgraded with the league in the third division in the 1960s. But rose again in the first year of the third division (1963) in the second division, now called A class . With the exception of one year in the third division, the club was able to hold the league until the end of the 1970s; During this time, Gurban Berdiýew , who was trained in his own youth, played for the club. In 1979, however, one rose again to the third class, in which one remained until the end of the USSR in the early 1990s.
In the first eight years the club was only twice non-Turkmen cup winners and champions, but at the turn of the millennium the club lost its dominance. Although they were runner-up in 2001 and vice-cup winners in 2005 and 2006, the club went bankrupt in July 2008 and broke up.
The name of the club is derived from the Kopet-Dag Mountains surrounding the city of Ashgabat .
