Spatuloricaria ( Syn . : Euacanthagenys , Fowler, 1945) is a genus from the catfish family of armor catfish (Loricariidae) and the subfamily Loricariinae . There are twelve species that live in northern and central South America from Colombia and Venezuela to Peru , in northeastern Brazil (river basin of Rio Tapajós and Rio Xingu ), and with one species ( Spatuloricaria fimbriata ) also in Central America in the Rio Tuira in the Panamanian Province of Darién are common.

features

Spatuloricaria species are sometimes relatively large, slender fish with a body length of 8 to 40 cm. Characteristic of the genus are the very poorly developed bone plates on the underside of the body. The head of the fish is triangular or rounded in plan view. In adult males, the outer edges of the head are covered with long, dense bristles and the hard rays of the pectoral and pelvic fins are covered with spines. The teeth of the fish are long and thin, those of the males have a spoon-shaped crown, while those of the females are narrow at the top. The upper ray of the caudal fin is elongated into a long filament.
