The Spenglerstein is a memorial stone for the aviation pioneer Walter Spengler in the Upper Harz .

location

It is located at the southern entrance to the Torfhaus settlement belonging to the Altenau-Schulenberg district in the Upper Harz of the town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld . The stone is located a little east of federal highway 4 .

Design and history

The Spenglerstein was built in 1932, according to other sources in 1931, for the pilot Walter Spengler who died in 1930 and who lived in Torhaus for some time and also ran a hotel here. Spengler landed and took off several times in an airplane at Torfhaus in the 1920s.

The stone was designed by the sculptor Sievers from Bad Harzburg and placed at the Hotel Wendt run by Spengler's parents , the so-called Brockenkrug , in front of today's visitor center of the Harz National Park . After the end of the Second World War, when the peat house and the hotel were largely destroyed, the federal road 4 leading through the village was significantly widened. In this context, the plumber had to be moved. He was taken to a wooded area east of Torfhaus, but was forgotten there. The national park forester Ulrich Schulze and the local writer Dirk Weddemar then arranged for the stone to be re-erected in the local area of Torfhaus, at a shop operated by Weddemar, the so-called Knusperhäuschen . In 2013, however, the holiday property Torfhaus Harzresort was built on the site of the stone . The plumber was therefore repositioned at its current location south of the department.

The stone bears the inscription:

TO THE RESIN FLYER
WALTER SPENGLER

* May 14, 1896 † September 18
, 1930

The stone is set with smaller stones.
