history

The Frankfurt trader Adolf Gregor Speyer and his partner Grund founded a trading company for natural dyes in Frankfurt in 1863 . In the same year a trend towards the development of synthetic dyes became apparent, supported by the founding of Bayer and the predecessor of the Hoechst paint factory , Master Lucius & Brüning. The company was therefore forced to think about new business areas.

In mombach succeeded the "Society for Chemical Industry", today prefere ParaForm that in the carbonization to distill acetic acid resulting in, so they as food could be used. In 1877 the trading house Speyer & Grund took over the marketing of the vinegar essence of the chemical factory in the Grand Duchy of Hesse . The success of the product was convincing. In 1911 a million bottles were sold.

Until 1922, the product was only sold in medium-sized containers such as glass balloons and demijohns. Then the introduction of the characteristic glass bottle with the constriction in the middle brought a further boost in sales for the end consumer. In 1924 these household bottles achieved sales of almost 2 million bottles. The company's headquarters were moved to Berlin-Weißensee in 1935 . A large-scale operation was built there based on the state of the art at the time . At the 3rd International Culinary Art Exhibition in Frankfurt in 1937, Essig-Essenz was awarded a Grand Prize with a gold plaque.

Due to the nationalization after the end of the Second World War , the company headquarters were relocated to Frankfurt again in 1949, and in 2004 the headquarters moved to Mainz . 20 million bottles were sold in 2013.

In mid-2017, the now typical glass bottle was replaced by PET in almost the same shape.
