The Special Touring Car Trophy , or STT for short, was launched in 1986 by Udo Lohmann. This created a new field of activity for the many Group 2 and Group 5 vehicles from the German Racing Championship . Rolf Krepschik has been organizing the series since 1996. Touring cars and Gran Turismos from 1968 onwards compete against each other in different displacement classes . Most of the races take place in Germany, but every year there are some starts in neighboring countries.

In the first year only the three classes for vehicles up to 1300 cm³, up to 2000 cm³ and over 2000 cm³ were advertised. In 1987 another class for vehicles up to 1600 cm³ was introduced. The vehicles had to comply with Group H regulations. Highlights during this time were starts as part of the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring or as part of the German Touring Car Championship . The starting fields were divided into two divisions, each of which competed in one race on the race weekend. The exception was the race on the Nordschleife , where a total of 120 vehicles competed in 1988. Until now, only Group H vehicles were allowed to compete in the STT, but from 1993 DTM vehicles were also permitted in the STT for the first time.

  • Class 4T: STT vehicles with turbocharging over 1600 to 2000 cm³
  • Class 5: STT vehicles over 2500 to 3200 cm³
  • Class 5T: STT vehicles with turbocharging up to 1600 cm³

  • Class 7: Porsche air-cooled up to 3800 cm³ and Porsche Transaxle 4 cylinder turbo and Porsche 996 up to 3600 cm³, with the exception of R-types and turbo.
  • STT special class 8: special vehicles over 3400 cm³
  • STT special class 9: special vehicles up to 3400 cm³

One free practice of approx. 20 minutes and two qualification trainings (timed practice) of at least 20 minutes each are planned for each event. The races run over a distance of 25 to 40 minutes and begin with a rolling start.

The classes have been divided into two divisions since 2014 (DIV. I classes 1-3, 8 and 9 - DIV II classes 4-7) and start in two start groups if the number of participants is sufficient. While the big cars drive in Division I, vehicles up to 3400 cm³ as well as the air-cooled and transaxle Porsches start in Division II. Both divisions will be honored on the overall winner's podium. In addition, the three best drivers will be rewarded with trophies at the end of the season.

As a highlight since 2016, some of the STT races have taken place as part of the ADAC GT Masters , and in 2017 also at the Truck Grand Prix .
