The game of knowledge is a quiz with dice game elements that was launched on the German market in 1984 . The aim of the game is to step through the fields of the planetary system by answering questions from different categories in order to be the first player to reach the fictional planet Galaxia .

history

The game first appeared in English as IQ 2000 . A Pop Music Trivia Edition was then released by Playtoy Industries in 1984 , a Rock Trivia Edition in 1987 and a Canadian edition ( IQ 2000 Trans Canada Trivia Game ). MB licensed the game from Playtoy Industries and IQ 2000 Products and then published it in 1984 in English as Game of Knowledge and in other languages (German: Spiel des Wissens , Dutch: 'N Kwestie van Weten ). In 1995 Game of Knowledge was published with a different layout (without a planetary system) at University Games . Jumbo has been distributing the game of knowledge in Germany since 1998 .

Furnishing

The game consists of a game board that shows a simplified representation of the solar system. There are cards with questions about general knowledge and cards with questions about special topics. Six special themes are assigned to six planets:

  • Mars - fairy tales and stories
  • Jupiter - heroes and villains
  • Saturn - cartoons and television
  • Uranus - word and language games
  • Neptune - animals and plants
  • Pluto (even if it no longer officially counts as a planet since 2006) - sports and games

The planets Mercury and Venus are not shown on the game board because they are closer to the sun than the earth.

The game also contains six characters and so-called planetary rings in the six planetary colors (Mars = red, Jupiter = yellow, Saturn = blue, Uranus = green, Neptune = orange and Pluto = purple).

Game flow

The player throws the dice and advances his pawn according to the number of dice on the game path into space. If a player lands on a sharp field, he has to answer a question from general knowledge. If he answers correctly, the game continues. If he answers incorrectly, the player remains on the field and the round is over. It is the next player's turn. When a player reaches a meteor field, he must answer a question from the corresponding special topic. If the answer is correct, he advances two spaces and rolls the die again. If he answers incorrectly, he must go back two spaces and the round is over. If a player reaches a planet, he must stop in any case, regardless of whether this is done with an exact number or not. On the planet, the player is asked a special question. If he answers correctly, he receives a planet ring the color of the planet reached. The planet ring is placed around the pawn and the player continues or ends his turn. If the answer is wrong, he must go back seven spaces and the round is over. The player who has collected all the planetary rings first and has reached the fictional planet "Galaxia" is the winner of the game.

Comment and criticism

The game is a mixture of gambling and knowledge testing. The sometimes too low level of difficulty and the distinction between A and B questions for children and adults are both strengths and weaknesses of the game. The low level of difficulty can quickly make the game boring for adults, the differentiation between A and B questions makes the game attractive as a family game, since children are not disadvantaged by the higher educational level of adults.
