Spilkishte

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Spilkischte was the name of today's suburban theater in Basel , which was founded in 1974.

It was the first year-round theater for children in Switzerland . From the outset, the theater functioned as a kind of collective without hierarchical structures. The respective ensemble acted simultaneously as artistic and organizational directors.

In the first year of its existence, the team went on tour with their plays on the one hand and invited other groups to guest performances on the other, because the Spilkischte theater placed great value on its own theater space from the start.

In the absence of suitable piece templates, the team soon began to process their own ideas into pieces. In the first few years many unusual theater pieces were created that were successful in Basel and on tour, but never made it to a theater publisher .

At that time, the founders of the theater were Gerd Imbsweiler and Ruth Oswalt . Both came from the Theater Basel and, based on their experience in the city theater, had the desire and motivation to found their own theater.

In 1987, the Spilkischte theater surprisingly received the Basel City Art Prize . Until 1999 the theater operated under the name «Theater Spilkischte». Then the less programmatic name «Vorstadttheater Basel» was chosen.
