Spirit Island is a small (half) island in Maligne Lake in the Jasper National Park of Alberta in Canada , immediately southeast of the Samson Narrows , a narrow point only 130 meters wide in the middle of the almost 22 kilometers long lake. Depending on the water level of the lake, it is often connected to the shore by a narrow land bridge overgrown with grass, so that it is then just a peninsula .

Spirit Island is the main attraction of the lake. However, since this is only accessible by road at its northern end, 14 km away, you can only reach it with a boat tour, after a long hike or by kayak. The tree-covered island with the southern part of the lake and the peaks of the Rockies in the background is one of the most famous photo motifs of the Canadian Rockies .

According to a legend of the local indigenous people , the island was the secret meeting place of a young couple from warring tribes. When the young woman's father found out about this relationship, he forbade her to ever visit the island again. Her lover, however, kept coming back here all his life and waited for her until he finally died in this place. His mind should not deal on the island and has him as the name today Spirit Iceland (to German Geisterinsel awarded).
