The Maligne Lake ( [məliːn leɪk] ) is a lake in Jasper National Park in Alberta , Canada , about 50 km south of the town of Jasper .
The lake lies at an altitude of 1670 m , has a surface of almost 20 km², an average depth of 100 m and a shore length of 45 km. It is fed with glacial water by the Maligne River , a tributary of the Athabasca River , and its temperature never rises above 4 ° C. In the lake lies Spirit Island, one of the landmarks of the Canadian Rockies .
The "discovery" of the lake is attributed to Mary Schaffer in 1908, who was looking for a lake on the upper reaches of the Athabasca called Chaba Imne (beaver lake) by the Indians and who had received a rough sketch of the location from the Stoney Indian Samson Beaver. However, Henry McLeod, a participant in a CPR expedition, was the first member of a non- indigenous people to see the lake in 1875.
Populations of rainbow trout and brook trout live in Maligne Lake . In the area around the oligotrophic lake with few nutrients and therefore low organic production, grizzlies , black bears , mule deer , reindeer , wolves , elk , mountain goats and bighorn sheep can be found in summer . Bald eagles and ospreys feed on the lake's fish population.
