Spofforth Castle is the ruins of a mansion in the village Spofforth in the English administrative unit North Yorkshire . The ruin is now managed by English Heritage and is a tourist attraction.

history

Henry de Percy had Spofforth Castle built in the early 14th century. He had received royal permission to build a fortified mansion (English: License to crenellate ). Later in the 14th and then in the 15th centuries the house was changed.

The lands of the Percys, including Spofforth, were confiscated by the crown after the rebellion against King Henry IV: 1408 and lent to Sir Thomas de Rokeby . They were later returned to the Percy family, but were lost again in 1461 when the Percys supported the losing side of the Wars of the Roses . Spofforth Castle was eventually returned to the family and their governor lived there until 1604. During the English Civil War 1642-1646, Spofforth Castle was then destroyed.

In 1924, Baron Leconfield handed the ruins over to the Office of Works . These ruins, mainly the western part of the original manor house, were designated as Historic Building II * by English Heritage. Grade listed. English Heritage also manages the property as a tourist attraction. The district administration Spofforth-with-Stockeld is co -administrator .
