Linguistic Atlas of Lower Franconia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Language Atlas of Lower Franconia (SUF) records the linguistic geography of the dialects of Lower Franconia . It is part of the Bavarian language atlas company Bayerischer Sprachatlas . The research project has existed at the University of Würzburg since 1989 . The SUF should completely record and document the dialects of Lower Franconia in their geographical distribution.

methodology

Question book

The SUF questionnaire was created in 1990 on the basis of the existing questionnaires of the Language Atlas of Bavarian Swabia and the Language Atlas of Northeast Bavaria . The common intersection of these two catalogs of questions was adopted, as was the question sequence. The questionnaire was expanded to include the subjects of viticulture, servants, house slaughter and schnapps distilling. Further topics are e.g. B. Cattle and their care , agriculture , fruit , man , clothing , dwelling .

The questionnaire contains a total of around 2500 questions and a large number of illustrations. On the one hand, the illustrations make it easier for the informant to identify complicated things, such as the individual parts of a car, and on the other hand, they ensure that the answer clearly relates to the object to be asked for.

survey

The dialect surveys for the SUF were carried out in 182 places, which corresponds to about every sixth place in Lower Franconia. Only dialect speakers who were at least 65 years old and who were at least the second generation to live in the survey location were interviewed. Almost without exception, the interviewed persons were active in the trades or in agriculture. Three to five dialect speakers were interviewed per location; a complete recording at one interview location took an average of five days.

The surveys were carried out using the direct survey method. The explorers visited the informants at home, where the questions from the questionnaire were then asked. The answers are entered directly into the questionnaire. In order to be able to record phonetic subtleties as precisely as possible, the explorers used the very differentiated phonetic transcription Teuthonista to write down the answers .

In addition to being written down, the questioning was recorded on tapes. In addition to a sound archive, a photo archive was also set up at the SUF. Above all, the explorers photographed objects of relevance, such as B. old farm equipment and old tools. The sources themselves, old farmhouses and the location of the photo were also photographed.

The SUF recordings were mainly carried out in the winter months. Many of the informants worked in agriculture and could not find time for an extensive survey in the summer.

Mapping

The dialect recordings will be published on point signature cards. Instead of the original receipts, a signature is drawn in at each location. The signatures consist of simple geometric shapes such as circles, triangles, squares or simple lines. The signature key is located in the map legend, in which the abstract signatures are assigned to the corresponding documents.
