Standard (language)
A linguistic norm is understood to be the standard or codified standards for correctness and appropriateness within a language . Linguistic norms relate to the structure of linguistic units ( grammar ), spelling ( orthography ) and pronunciation ( orthoepie ), but also to the design of text types and forms of communication .
Linguistic norms can have implicit validity or can be codified in sets of rules by recognized authorities or institutions. They can be understood either descriptively as a description of the linguistic state or prescriptively as a rule for correct linguistic behavior.
