The "Sprudel" in Karlovy Vary

The Hot Spring Colonnade is a building in the Czech spa town of Karlovy Vary . The geyser of the “hot spring” located next to it sprays up to a height of twelve meters.

history

The first colonnade was built on this site in 1826 and replaced by a cast iron structure in 1879 . After the demolition, which had become necessary in 1939 due to corrosion damage , a wooden structure was temporarily built and then in 1975 a glazed colonnade made of reinforced concrete .

More plans

The future plans for the colonnade range from demolition to preservation. A group of experts commissioned by the City of Karlovy Vary in 2016 could not make a decision. According to the Deputy Mayor Jiří Klsák, the fact that a new building can only take place ten years after the demolition due to the subsoil speaks against demolition. He sees the colonnade as "historical legacy". Therefore, by 2018, repair work worth around 40 million crowns should initially take place and allow continued operation for at least 15 years.
