SquirrelMail is an open source webmail frontend written in PHP . It uses the IMAP and SMTP functions integrated in PHP to receive and send emails via existing SMTP and IMAP servers. It can be installed on any web server as long as PHP is available and the server has access to an SMTP or IMAP server. The interface can be used without JavaScript and is HTML 4.0 compliant.

SquirrelMail can be expanded with a number of plug-ins , for example spam filters and spell checking.

The current program version 1.4.23-svn has been tested up to PHP version 7.3 and was released at the end of 2017. It replaces version 1.4.22, which only ran up to PHP version 5.3. The abbreviation SVN, for Apache Subversion, indicates that bug fixes and minor enhancements are no longer published directly as new version numbers, but that the current main version is maintained directly in the version control system in the sense of rolling releases . In addition, developer versions are maintained and kept that contain new extensions and visual improvements, but are not yet offered as stable. The current development version is 1.5.2-svn.

Historical:

On June 16, 2009, unknown hackers broke into SquirrelMail's web server, modifying password modules.

On April 19, 2018, cPanel announced in their blog that they would be removing Squirrelmail as a webmail option from cPanel.

requirements

No special operating system is required to run Squirrelmail on the web server, as it only requires PHP as an interpreter . For use as a webmailer by the user, only a web browser and corresponding access data for the mail service are required. Many inexpensive web hosts provide a ready-to-use Squirrel mail as standard web mail or offer it for automatic installation.

variants

Since Squirrelmail still offers a very conservative layout, there are development variants that add a different design. These include the GPL forks Squirrel-Cangrejo , Squirrel-Overlook and Squirrel-Outlook , as well as Nutsmail with chargeable skins . The latter is also dedicated to use on mobile devices, for which a simplified layout is switched after browser recognition.
