Squirrel & Bär is an English learning game and point-and-click adventure game for children by the German development company the Good Evil GmbH from 2014. The game is available on iOS devices (iPad and iPhone) as well as for all Android devices from version 2.3 playable. In the year of publication, the game won several prizes, including the German Developer Award 2014 for the best children's game and the TOMMI children's software award for the “Preschool & Kindergarten” area.

Game content

In the game, the main characters Squirrel and Bear have to save the sick bees and get a medicinal plant that is guarded by the lynx in the distant mountains. To get to the medicinal plant, Squirrel and Bear have to travel through the forest and the city to the mountains and have adventures in the process. During the adventures, the players learn the English language as the characters speak English outside the forest and they have to communicate with them. For this purpose they got a vocabulary book from the badger.

Learning concept

The players learn the English language by having to communicate with the various animals outside the forest, gradually building up their vocabulary.

Development and reception

The game was developed by the Cologne- based programming company the Good Evil GmbH with the support of the Film- und Medienstiftung Nordrhein-Westfalen . The idea and the game design come from company founder Linda Kruse, the programming and scripting by Guido Lorenz and Renaud van Strydonck and the illustration and animation of the illustration and animation by Ulla Schmidt, the theme music was by Rolf Lammers and Jonas Schweitzer- Faust produces. The English texts were spoken with up to 900 vocabulary by English native speakers in studio quality and correspond to the European Framework of Reference for language acquisition at level A1.
