The children's software award TOMMI is an award for children's software, both educational software and PC and console games, which has been presented at the Frankfurt Book Fair since 2002 .
All German-language PC and console games, as well as apps and electronic toys, are eligible. A multi-member jury made up of specialist journalists (e.g. Die Zeit , Spiegel Online , Familie & Co , FAZ , SZ , Bild am Sonntag and others) and educators select ten nominations in each of the categories. In the first few years, a ten-member children's jury selected the three winners. In 2006 the special “Kindergarten & Preschool” prize was awarded for the first time. There has also been a console award since 2008, an award for the best children's app since 2012 and for the best electronic toy since 2014.
The award is supported by dbv , the Frankfurt Book Fair , Partner & Sons, Google , jugendschutz.net and the media partner ZDF . The TOMMI is awarded by the Kindermedien Feibel.de office in Berlin.
Since 2003 there has been a jury for children aged six to 13 years. The children's jury tests the nominated games every year and is present at the fair for the award ceremony. In 2008 the children's jury was increased from ten to around 900 girls and boys when the children's jury passed its verdict in twelve large city libraries. Since then, the TOMMI children's software award has been a Germany-wide media competence and participation project. By 2019, the number of participants in the children's jury had risen to 3,300 in 19 large and small-town public libraries. The award is under the patronage of the Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Dr. Franziska Giffey.
