Witch It is a German computer game from 2017. The game is currently in the early access version.

Gameplay

Plot and characters

Witch It is a fantasy - action RPG that in multiplayer mode is played and on the game concept of hiding game (English: Hide and Seek ) oriented. Here one player takes on the role of witches who have to survive and the other player the role of witch hunters . The witches can disguise themselves as objects and fly, while the hunters have different options to track down and catch witches. Each round has a limited time to hide and a limited time to catch witches. The game world itself contains, among other things, villages, islands, ice floes, mysterious forests, magical witch houses and is graphically stylized with humor.

Game modes

There are currently five game modes :

  • Hide And Seek: The hunters must catch all of the witches to win the round. Witches win when the limited search time expires or all hunters give up.
  • Mobification: Based on Hide And Seek, but here the captured witches also become hunters.
  • Hunt A Hag: The special abilities are disabled for both teams and hunters can only use their melee weapon. Otherwise the mode works similarly to Hide And Seek, with more emphasis on catching.
  • Fill A Pot: Teams of witches and hunters of the same size compete against each other to fill three of five magical cauldrons with two props each or to prevent this. This requires a high level of activity from all players and is therefore rewarded with more experience points than in other game modes.
  • Creative: The creative mode allows you to create your own levels and arrange props. Such levels can be published in the Steam Workshop for other players to download and play.

Game elements

A core mechanic is turning the witches into props to visually camouflage themselves. That is why each card is thematically equipped with various props to make the search more difficult for hunters. There are more than 360 items (as of June 2020) in many categories such as furniture (e.g. cupboard, chair) and food (e.g. pumpkin, pear).

As a player in the witches or hunters team, you have special skills that expand mobility or usefulness. This can tactically improve the detection and capture of witches or the hiding and escape from hunters.

Game progress by collecting accessories provides an incentive to play. Activity is rewarded with experience points and increases the level of the players, which in turn promotes the gathering of resources. There are more than 700 items to customize the appearance of witches and hunters using hats, jackets, pants and more.

With resources, players can make cosmetic items according to given recipes, some of which are generated at random and therefore have different degrees of rarity. Accessories and resources can be exchanged through Steam, with rare items being the most desirable.

Game world

Thirteen cards of different sizes and themes offer variety during hiding and hunting:

  1. Snowbreeze: Snow-covered village with a hostel in winter, plays at night
  2. The Chummy Potato: village square with tavern in autumn, plays at night
  3. Grunewald Library: library with a maze in autumn
  4. Morning hour: village with blacksmith's hut in spring
  5. Fiskersted: coastal village on frozen river and frozen lake monster
  6. Grunewald At Night: Closed library, plays at night
  7. Loakiki Paradise: Tourist island with a beach
  8. Kula Kula Islands: Mystical island complex with shipwreck
  9. Sleeping Rose Cemetery: Church and cemetery, plays at night
  10. Twin Mask Theater: Theater with stage and cellar, plays at night
  11. Shipwreck Hollow: Huge pirate grotto with shipwrecks
  12. Port Plunder: Pier for pirates, plays at night
  13. Cursed Ruins: lighthouse on island, plays at night

Multiplayer

There are a total of four official servers in Europe, America, Asia, Australia that offer low ping instances to players worldwide. Game progress can only be achieved on such official servers. This includes collecting experience points and items, whereby the latter can be exchanged with other players via Steam. In addition, practically every player can start their own server and set their own rules of the game. A maximum of 16 players can take part in each game at the same time. There are currently more than 100,000 owners of the game (as of November 2018), with a maximum of 1,582 playing at the same time (June 29, 2020).

Development and publication

A total of seven developers were involved in the implementation of the game in the Barell Roll Games studio in Eilenstedt (as of June 2020):

  • Tina Heitmann: visual concepts, images / textures
  • Lukas Köhne: 3D modeling
  • Nils Ohlig: programming
  • Christoph Rienäcker: 3d modeling
  • Bent Nürnberg: programming
  • Lisa Sherin Carstensen: 3d modeling
  • Jasmin Bentler: programming

technology

As a game engine is the Unreal Engine 4 used; if necessary, it is switched to the latest version. Development work lasted a year and a half before the game was first published for Microsoft Windows on the online sales platform Steam on May 31, 2017 . In February 2018, the team gained the Hamburg-based manufacturer Daedalic Entertainment as a publisher . A version for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 is in development. Development of the game continues as known issues are fixed and content is added.

Development details

Development of the game under the former name "Witch Hunt" began in September 2016 and was inspired by "PropHunt (Hide'n'Seek)" for Garry's Mod. The private alpha phase of the test ended on February 2, 2017, and the name was changed to "Witch It" on February 25, 2017 in order to avoid potential confusion with other games of the same name on the market.

4players Well

The online magazine " 4Players " describes the game as a bit minimalistic , but with a slight addiction factor. The hectic chases, searches and tricking players, which can lead to funny situations, especially with friends, are fun. However, more scope and variety is desired in the game in order to ensure more long-term motivation. The principle is based on shooter modes such as "Prop Hunt" from Garry's Mod . The simple controls, the beautiful graphics and the dynamic gameplay are also praised.

The online magazine "Ascendum Gaming" praises the game for the helpful community of players and the good communication with the developers, but the instability of the servers and the instability of the game because of the unreal engine are criticized. Overall, a rating of 9.0 was given.

The online magazine "Bonus Stage" rates the game as "very good" and awards 8/10 points. The design of the game world and the music are perceived as successful, but reference is made to the difficult entry for newbies.

The online magazine "dgit" mentions the strange behavior of the props, the geometry and physics of which hinder the players' progress. In addition, the shaking of the camera creates a feeling of nausea in the viewer. Still, Witch It is seen as a better made early access game than comparable titles.

The online magazine "KeenGamer" rates Witch It as the best game of hide-and-seek, despite the lack of equipment that one expects from such a game. The missing music is given as an example.

The game has received more than 4900 user reviews on Steam, 85% of which are positive (as of June 2020).

Awards

The game won the 14th German Developer Award on December 6, 2017 in the “Most Wanted” category and also the German Computer Game Award 2018 on April 10, 2018 in the “Best German Game”, “Best International Multiplayer Game” and “Best Youth game “'. There was prize money of 185,000 euros for this. The Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder presented the award and emphasized the importance of the computer game industry for Munich as a business location . The game was also nominated in the “Best Innovation” category .
