Lego City Undercover (proper spelling: LEGO City Undercover ) is an open-world - video game of action-adventure - genre . It was developed by TT Fusion developed by Nintendo in March 2013 initially exclusive to the Wii U launched. On April 6, 2017, a graphically enhanced version of the game was released for PlayStation 4 , Xbox One , Nintendo Switch and the PC gaming platform Steam on Windows . In April 2013, a prequel called Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins was released for the Nintendo 3DS .

The plot of Undercover takes place two years after the events of The Chase Begins instead. The player takes on the role of the police officer Chase McCain, who is supposed to catch the criminal Rex Fury in Lego City. The game principle is based heavily on other open world games such as the games in the Grand Theft Auto series. It is based on the Lego franchise; most of the objects in the game are made from Lego bricks.

action

The game tells of the cop Chase McCain, who comes to Lego City to put the villain Rex Fury under arrest. McCain has already taken action against Rex in the past, but this has now succeeded in breaking out. The paramedic (formerly news anchor) Natalia Kowalski had testified against Rex at the time and is therefore now in the witness protection program. Chase is supported in his mission by Ellie Phillips and Frank Honey. However, his boss, Marion Dunby, wants to pull Chase off the case due to his ineptitude. Because of Dunby's opposition, Chase can only investigate undercover. He can gain the trust of Rex's allies and steals vehicles, jewels and precious antiques. However, Natalia's father, Professor Kowalski, was kidnapped by Rex. He was able to reconcile with Natalia and put her up with Ellie, as she was threatened by men in suits in front of the clinic. When Chase saved the life of the Italian ice cream producer Vinnie Pappalardo and pretended to be Jimmy at a construction site, Natalia was kidnapped by men in suits. It turns out that billionaire Forrest Blackwell is the client of Rex and has persuaded him to kidnap Professor Kowalski because he needs him for his most important project: the launch of the Blackwell Tower. He wants to fly with his tower, which has been converted into a rocket, on the moon and establish a colony there. In doing so, however, he destroys Lego City. He kidnapped Natalia to use her as leverage for her father. Chase and Professor Kowalski were able to prevent the destruction of Lego City, but not the launch of the Blackwell rocket. Chase flies into space on a rocket from Apollo Island and pursues Blackwell. On Blackwell's space station there is the final fight between Rex and Chase, which Chase was able to win. Blackwell flies away with a space capsule and is lost. Chase was able to save Natalia's life. Chase, Natalia and Rex land unharmed in Lego City. Rex is arrested and Chase is celebrated as a hero. Chase and Natalia get together.

Characters

  • Chase McCain is the protagonist of the game. He's a cop and put the felon Rex Fury behind bars. When this breaks out, Chase has to go to Lego City again, not only to stop Rex, but also to get together with Natalia.
  • Natalia Kowalski is a former news anchor who was accepted into the witness protection program (end of "The Chase Begins") through the testimony of her dazed ex-boyfriend Chase. Since then, she's been trying to stay away from Chase. Chase just wants to protect her and in the end the two become a couple again.
  • Rex Fury is the most vicious and brutal criminal Lego City has ever had. Chase brought him to prison, but escaped again. After a long fight between him and Chase, he is thrown into space and ends up upside down in a Lego City toilet. He was arrested shortly afterwards.
  • Frank Honey is a friend of Chase and practically adores him. He has a love for video games. However, it is implied that he has a relationship with Forrest Blackwell. He is in love with Ellie.
  • Chief Marion Dunby is Chases and Frank's boss and is very strict. He hates Chase and would do anything to get the spotlight. That's why he pulls Chase off cases more often.
  • Mayor Gleeson was the former chief of the Lego City Police Department. Due to her actions she was declared the new mayor of Lego City and passed her office on to Chief Dunby, whom she does not particularly like.
  • Ellie Phillips is the attractive and intelligent secretary for the LEGO City Police Department. Frank is in love with her, but she only wants him as a good friend. She takes Natalia in and is good friends with Chase.
  • Professor Henrik Kowalski is Natalia's father and is kidnapped by Rex in the course of the plot. But Chase can save him. He's the one who kept Lego City from being destroyed.
  • Vinnie Pappalardo is an ice cream magnate and a negotiating partner for Rex. Chase goes undercover with him and saves his life on the side. He is from Italy.
  • Chan Chuang is a limo rental company and an ally of Rex. He is considered stressful, rude, and aggressive. He always refers to Chase as a "driver". You can only calm him down with his bunny. He has Chinese roots.
  • Forrest Blackwell is the game's antagonist, a billionaire who commissioned Rex. His plan is to use Natalia as leverage for Professor Kowalski, to convert his tower into a rocket, to found a colony on the moon and thereby destroy Lego City. His plan is thwarted by Chase. Due to a collision, his space capsule is shot into the infinite space. His fate is uncertain.
  • Studski & Clutch are policemen who help Chase on the special job "junkyard junk".
  • Clown robbers Lou, Max & Wes appear in the first special order. After a bank robbery, Chase has to arrest all three.
  • Moe De Luca is Vinnie Pappalardo's cousin. Chase escapes with him in a prisoner van to strengthen Vinnie's trust in him.
  • Director Warden Stonewall is the director of Albatros Prison.

  • Cornelius Burns is the head of the LEGO City Fire Department.
  • Albert Spindlerrouter is in charge of the construction site in Paradise Sands.
  • Werner Spindlerrouter is Albert's twin brother.
  • George Fartarbensonbury is a businessman. A thief who said an imaginary name as the boss of the gang during a police questionnaire made him famous.
  • Barry Smith is the dojo director and plumber. He teaches Chase to defend himself.
  • Captain Bluffbeard is the captain of the container ship that will bring Chase back to LEGO City. He later became the captain of the LEGO City ferry lines.
  • Duke Huckleberry is Ellie Phillips' uncle and he hands the grappling hook to Chase. Chase is also assigned by the chief to work for Huckleberry for a period.

development

TT Fusion had wanted to develop a Lego City-based video game for a long time, but never had the opportunity and instead produced Lego games based on a license. In 2010, the studio started producing a prototype Lego City video game. In 2011 Nintendo visited the studio and demonstrated the new Wii U console, which was still in development at the time. The Japanese company convinced the studio to further develop the prototype on the Wii U. According to the developers, it didn't take long for the game to be redesigned for the Wii U. The game's plot was broadly set before the scriptwriter Graham Goring joined the team.

Lego City Undercover was developed by TT Fusion under the supervision of Nintendo. The group was in contact with the developers and sent regular feedback, but did not intervene directly in the development. Specifically, producers and employees from the Nintendo Software Planning & Development (SPD) department were involved. Also, Nintendo localized the game and released it. This is a first-party game for Nintendo.

The tablet-like controller of the Wii U is heavily used in the game. The developers said they had many ideas for the Wii-U GamePad, which is why the game in its final form would not have been feasible without this controller. For a long time the team had also planned a two-player mode, but since the game concept would have had to be adapted accordingly, it was discarded.

As one of the first Wii U games, the game was announced under the title Lego City Stories during the Nintendo E3 press conference in June 2011. At E3 in June 2012, the game was re-revealed as Lego City Undercover and the 3DS prequel was announced at the same time.

On April 6, 2017, an implementation for Nintendo's new console Nintendo Switch as well as for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows was released.

Lego City: Undercover received a positive response from the trade press. At Metacritic it has an average rating of 80%. the German-language computer game magazine GamePro rated the poor technical implementation of the Nintendo Switch version. The high resolution in handheld and TV mode was praised.
