Portal Knights combines exploring and building the game world ( sandbox game ) as well as fighting monsters with role play and survival elements. The player can create tools, weapons and other items ( crafting ), build dwellings and accept quests from non-player characters . Every now and then there is a fight with a boss . The game can be played alone or with up to three other players at the same time ( co-op mode ). Two people can also play in split-screen mode. Because of the building blocks principle, the game is often compared to the game Minecraft . In contrast, more emphasis is placed on the game principle with the portals, role-playing elements and their background stories and offers more options in some areas. However, the more complex details from Minecraft such as circuits and systems are missing. The nicer look, the background music and the atmosphere in the game are also praised. The slimmed-down comparison to the original, missing functions, complexity and depth in some areas, game errors and lack of long-term motivation are criticized . The target group were mostly young players. On Metacritic , the game received an average rating of 72%.
