Purple Pills (English for: " Purple Pills ") is a song by the US rap group D12 . The song is the second single from their debut album Devils Night and was released on July 9, 2001. The song is also included on the sampler Shady XV from Eminem's label Shady Records .

The single was also released as a defused version with changed text under the title Purple Hills (English for: " Purple Hills "), which was mostly played on the radio instead of the original.

The song belongs to the genre hardcore rap . In terms of content, it is mainly about the consumption of various drugs , such as ecstasy , hashish or magic mushrooms , with all rappers slipping into the role of a lyrical self .

After the refrain he sings, Eminem begins the first verse and raps that he has hallucinations from mushrooms . He gets violent fantasies and disses the rapper Vanilla Ice . Then Kuniva and Kon Artis take turns rapping, who are on a drug trip triggered by LSD , cheese and mescaline . Proof's verse is about the fact that after he drew lines , his condom broke while having sex with a prostitute and he now has to get rid of the baby. Swift says he doesn't care what or how much drugs he takes, the main thing is that he is high . As so often, Bizarre has the most controversial verse: Among other things, he raps about being at a rave and raping a woman while intoxicated .

Purple Pills was produced by Eminem, using no samples of other songs. The song was recorded at The Lodge and the 54Sound studio in Detroit .

Music video

It starts with Eminem driving a road down purple hills in a car; before each verse, the rappers who are now starting step in until all six members of D12 are in the car at the end. During the verse, you can see the rappers rapping in front of an animated background created using blue screen technology . Proof appears disguised as a clown at a children's birthday party and ends up shooing away the guests while Swift loses to a woman in an arm wrestling and dances bizarre at a party with scantily clad women. The rapper Xzibit also has a cameo in the video .

Chart successes and awards

Purple Pills entered the German singles charts at number 24 on July 30, 2001, and two weeks later reached the top position at number 19. Overall, the song stayed in the top 100 for ten weeks. The song was particularly successful in the United Kingdom, where it reached number 2, stayed in the charts for 19 weeks and received a gold record for more than 400,000 copies sold in 2018 .
