St. Clemens is a Roman Catholic chapel in the Olk part of the Ralingen parish in the Trier-Saarburg district ( Rhineland-Palatinate ).

history

The St. Clemens Chapel is a Romanesque church with a choir tower that was built around 1200. At that time the Trier Imperial Abbey of St. Maximin owned Olk. It is possible that a small church existed in the same place as a noble church as early as the 8th or 9th century . The church was mentioned in a document for the first time in 1569.

In 1789/90 the entrance was moved to the west side, and in 1803 a vestibule was added to the chapel. The stone altar dates from 1715, it was dedicated to St. Clement (Pope from 92 to 101 AD). In his honor, a statue was also placed in a niche in the front of the chapel below the Romanesque tympanum in the walled-up portal.

During the Second World War, the bell of the church was melted down for war purposes and the church tower was badly damaged by a grenade in February 1945. In 1945/46 a new bell was purchased and the church tower was poorly rebuilt by the villagers. In 1951 the money for the reconstruction of the roof had been brought together painstakingly in view of the general emergency. Construction work began two years later, and a few months later the chapel appeared in a new shape. In 1959, an unknown donor donated a new bell to the chapel, which was consecrated by Pastor Ludes on the day of penance and prayer of the same year. Previously, in 1952, a memorial had been erected in the vestibule of the chapel in honor of the fallen and missing of the two world wars. In 1953 the sheet metal cladding of the church tower was replaced by slate.

In 1966/67 the chapel was renovated and provided with heating. A new sacristy was also built . In 1969 the cemetery was expanded, a morgue was built and the chapel was redesigned.
