Squirrel or Die is a card game by Seppy Yoon that was first published in 2014 by the game publisher Fight in a Box . It is a game in two phases, in which cards must be laid out in the first phase (autumn) and the display must be revealed in the second phase (winter). In terms of content, the players play squirrels who collect and hide supplies in autumn and have to find them again in winter.

Style of play

In the game Squirrel or Die , players play in two phases known as autumn and winter. In the first phase you lay out cards for a field, in the second phase you have to reveal cards from the display and find the supplies hidden in them. In addition to the instructions printed on six cards, the game material consists of 28 cards. Of these, 14 are food cards, 9 death cards and 9 special cards with a special function.

Game flow

At the beginning of the game, the set of cards is adjusted to the number of players, removing 6 food and death cards each from two players, removing 3 death cards from three players and removing 3 food cards from four players. The remaining cards are shuffled and each player is dealt three cards in hand. Then a starting display is made up of three face-up and one face-down cards, the remaining cards form a face-down draw pile.

The game is in two phases. The first phase, autumn, begins with a starting player ("person who looks most like a squirrel") and then the players play in clockwise order. The active player reveals a card from the draw pile and places it face up in the display, then chooses one of the face up cards and puts it in hand. He fills the gap with a card from his hand, which he lays down face down, thus ending his turn. As soon as the draw pile is used up, no more cards are added and as soon as there are no more open cards on display, the players just put their cards face down in the display. In this way, with two players, a display area with 4 times 4 cards is created, with three or four players a display area of 5 times 5 cards.

As soon as the display is complete, the second phase or winter begins. In this phase each player always reveals a card, revealing either a food card, a death card or a special card:

  • If he reveals a food card, nothing happens and it is the next player's turn.
  • If he reveals a death card, the player loses one life point ("die a little")
  • If he reveals a special card, the following happens:
    • The Bomb: The player loses two life points.
    • Again: The player must reveal another card.
    • The sleepy squirrel: The player can skip a round.
    • Squirrel Love: The player gets an additional life point.
    • Cofused Cat: The player can choose an opponent who loses one life point.

As soon as a player has lost three life points, he is eliminated from the game. The winner is the player who is the last to have at least one life point. In the event of a tie, the player who revealed the most food cards wins.

variants

On the Fight in a Box website, the game designer presents two variants of the game.

The birdhouse

With the variant The Birdhouse , the “Vogelhaus” card is added to the card pile instead of a normal food card and treated as a special card. The game setup starts with 4 face up cards. In autumn, players have to exchange face-up cards for face-down cards from their own hand, but they may place them in any position on the display. As soon as the birdhouse comes into play, it remains open and serves as a landmark. Winter is played in the same way as in the base game.

Reverse or Die

The distribution of cards corresponds to the basic game. In the display, instead of the usual four, all 25 cards are laid out face up as a 5x5 display. In autumn, the players take one after the other the openly displayed cards from the middle and place them face down in their own display, but may only lay them down horizontally and vertically next to each other. In winter, players can reveal cards in each player display.
