Sebdou ( Arabic سبدو; Central Atlas Tamazight ⵙⴻⴱⴷⵓ ) is a north-western Algerian city ​​with approx. 35,000 inhabitants and the capital of a municipality (commune) consisting of several villages with a total of approx. 40,000 inhabitants in the province of Tlemcen .

Location and climate

The town of Sebdou is located in the Monts de Tlemcen , part of the Tell Atlas , at an altitude of about 910 to 940  m . The climate is mostly temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 465 mm / year) falls - sometimes as snow - mainly in the winter months.

Since the 1960s, Sebdou has experienced a high level of immigration by families from the rural regions of Algeria.

economy

The economy in the area is mainly characterized by wool production; still mostly of nomads operated sheep traditionally plays the most important role in the economic life of the city.

history

Under the rule of the Ottomans (from 1554) the Berber town of Tafraoua was an army outpost. From 1830/48 to 1962 Sebdou was part of the French colony of Algeria ; it was at times a garrison stand around which a modern city developed.
