The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation , SLBC for short ( Sinhala : ශ්රී ලංකා ගුවන් විදුලි සංස්ථාව , Śrī Laṅkā Guvan Viduli Saṃsthāva ; Tamil : இலங்கை ஒலிபரப்புக் கூட்டுத்தாபனம் , Ilaṅkai Oliparappuk Kūṭṭuttāpaṉam ) is the public radio broadcaster of Sri Lanka .
history
The SLBC's radio service is the oldest in South Asia. It started as Colombo Radio on December 16, 1925 , allegedly with a transmitter salvaged from a German submarine. During the Second World War, Lord Mountbatten had the British soldiers station Radio SEAC (South-East Asian Command) relocate from New Delhi first to Kandy and then to Colombo . Its transmission systems were handed over to Radio Ceylon in 1949 . Under the Colombo Plan , Radio Ceylon received support from Australia and for the next 30 years it was one of the most popular in the region. In 1967 Radio Ceylon was given the legal form of a corporation and with the creation of the Republic in 1972 the name Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation .
